Over the many years of having coffee in my life I have never managed to get a good tasting instant coffee using the standard granulated blends. I got into properly brewing my coffee from home instead and have had many great tasting coffees that were not made using the instant coffee.
No matter what method I applied to an instant coffee they sadly always resulted in disappointing flavors with exception to the instant cappuccino variant.
I also am fond of the Bulletproof Style Coffee and Paleo options in fact I have made it a daily routine for the last few years and I have felt great since including these in my lifestyle.
I tried using the cold water and stir the granules method. tried adding milk and then the heat. tried not over boiling the water and still the flavor came out the same.
Since moving to the brewing with a french press however its very hard to go back to instant coffee, I tried today and as per usual it just never stops.
I have never considered myself a perfectionist when it comes to making coffee and some of my coffee making methods raise eyebrows a good example putting butter in my coffee (not the salted kind). instant coffee always gave me a headache as well so never overly enjoyed the experience.
Though there is one method for instant coffee that does taste good Iced coffee, serving up a coffee milkshake or iced coffee tastes great when it comes to having a cold one as the flavors blend well and taste great in milk or protein shakes.
I am also not fond of using sugar in my morning coffee I tend to prefer using Stevia to keep the calories down. How do you best enjoy your instant coffee. and the express one with the instant foam is one of the better ones I have tasted.
My Preferred Coffee
When I make my desired coffee I find either pre-ground beans at my local store or I'll buy a bag of beans to grind myself though I have found the best way to go has been with pre-ground beans in smaller bags I find the fresh beans store much better in the small bags and usually good to the last coffee.
My long time preference is the Mountain Coffee, I am not going to mention the brands but the mountain style coffee range has a fantastic flavor and texture that I personally feel cant be beat yet mild enough to never feel too strong.
I'll brew the coffee for about 3-4 minutes and I'll know its ready just by how it smells utilizing both my filter and french press I'll brew the coffee fully in the french press and pour the hot coffee through a stainless steel pour over coffee filter into my blender. adding some unsalted butter to the mix and coconut oil.
I will never use salted butter for this makes the drink taste terrible 🙂 but I discovered the recipe from reading a book and watching many videos online and its sort of stuck with me since.
Home Brewing Kit
The process doesn't take too long as I am only using the filter to keep the grinds from going into the coffee and yes it still passes the french press filter so this is my solution to making sure a minimal amount get passed. I then begin tapping the filter shown on top of the blender with the tablespoon to speed up the filtration process a bit. add the 3 ingredients and hit blend.
Why I use a filter after
Putting the brew through 3 minutes or so and then tapping the result as it goes through takes about 30 seconds or less as it goes through into the blender. I grab the unsalted butter, some coconut oil and some stevia and blend the final result.
I have used both an expensive french press and its provided filter and the cheaper french press with provided filters even tried adding extra filter layers to it and using the pour over filter has worked wonders for filtering the coffee into a blender.
35 seconds is generally long enough blend time if the blender is fairly high end otherwise a minute may be better.
This is the result a creamy rich cup of coffee with a flavor that is not watered down that tastes fantastic. I have tried this method with many brands of instant coffees and it has always failed to deliver a great tasting coffee if you don't put enough in the drink tastes like butter and if you put too much in it tastes too strong. also tried stirring it in cold water before applying heat same problem.
So this my friends is why its so hard for me to go back to instant coffee but I will keep searching for the instant coffee solution that will work for when I am traveling but for now a small bag of pre-ground coffee will have to do :).
